HERO: LIFE. HEALING. JUSTICE. EMERGING ADULTS ADVOCATED

Who Is Uzima?

Welcome to Uzima

Welcome to Uzima, where life, justice, and advocacy intersect with purpose and compassion. We are a community-centered initiative rooted in the belief that justice should evolve with the people it serves. At Uzima, our mission is clear: to support families affected by long-term incarceration, elevate the voices of emerging adults who were sentenced at a time when policy ignored developmental science, and advocate for meaningful opportunities for sentence review after 25 years served.

Our goals are grounded in fairness, healing, and transformation. We aim to educate not just those impacted by incarceration, but entire communities, about how Oklahoma’s sentencing history has shaped today’s system. Many of our loved ones received lengthy sentences during an era when “tough on crime” rhetoric overshadowed rehabilitation, and emerging adults were treated as fully mature offenders despite evidence that brains and behavior continue to develop into the mid-twenties.

Uzima exists to fill this gap in understanding and action. We believe that rehabilitation should mean something, and that after decades of committed change, demonstrated through education, restorative programming, and positive community influence; there should be a structured and humane way to have a sentence reviewed. This isn’t about erasing accountability; it’s about acknowledging growth and recognizing humanity. Our efforts focus on advocacy, public education, family support, and legislative engagement that aligns policy with evidence and fairness. Uzima also understands that justice reform requires active civic participation. One of the most powerful ways to influence change is by knowing your lawmakers, understanding the policies they support, and participating in the democratic process through informed voting. Being knowledgeable about who represents you, what they stand for, and how their decisions affect real lives is essential. If you are not registered to vote or need to check your voter registration status in Oklahoma, visit the official Oklahoma State Election Board’s registration page here: https://ok.gov/elections/voter_information/voter_registration.html.

We commend Representative Danny Williams for his leadership in bringing attention to the complexities of long-term sentencing. His work in facilitating the interim study on life without parole sentencing helped illuminate an issue often kept in the shadows, sparking conversations about fairness, public safety, and second look opportunities. Uzima stands in appreciation of efforts that lift difficult topics into the light, so that families and communities can work toward solutions together.

As we move forward, our direction is focused and hopeful. We will continue to build partnerships, share stories, and empower individuals with information and resources. We will encourage civic engagement and partnerships with like-minded organizations, all while staying grounded in our core values of dignity, respect, and evidence-based advocacy. At Uzima, we believe that when communities are informed, engaged, and compassionate, meaningful change is possible.

Welcome and thank you for joining us on this journey toward justice, understanding, and restored lives.
