The Full Story About
Emerging Adults and Why Advocacy Matters

At Uzima, we see the potential in every young adult, even when the world doesn’t. Emerging adults roughly ages 18 to 25 are just beginning to navigate life, learning who they are, and making choices that will shape their future. Yet too often, they are treated as if they already have all the answers.
History hasn’t made it easier. On November 1, 1987, laws introduced life without parole for juveniles, and the “superpredator” panic labeled teens as dangerous and beyond hope. Thousands of young people were locked away, stripped of guidance, opportunity, and the chance to grow into adulthood.
At Uzima, we believe no one should be written off because of their age or past. We stand with emerging adults, giving them support, tools, and opportunities to build the life they deserve: strengthening themselves, their families, and their communities along the way.

Mission
Our mission is to advance justice, wellness, and wholeness for families affected by incarceration, with a focus on young people facing extreme and unjust sentencing. Grounded in the principle of uzima, we advocate to eliminate barriers such as ineffective counsel, inequitable legal processes, and lack of system knowledge that separate children from their families for life. We equip, uplift, and empower families to advocate for fair treatment, humane sentencing, and meaningful second chances.
Vision
Uzima envisions a justice system that recognizes growth, honors rehabilitation, and provides meaningful, realistic opportunities for release for people sentenced as emerging adults.
